Overseas Exchange
Our Student Exchange programme offers the opportunity to enjoy another culture, gain life skills, broaden your employment opportunities and live the overseas experience, without interruption to your studies.
Imagine spending the weekend exploring the Great Wall in China, climbing Tokyo Tower, cycling in the Netherlands, or kayaking in North Carolina - all after a week of studying towards your degree.
About Student Exchange
If you’re an eligible Ara student studying towards a degree, you can choose to do 6-12 months of your study at one of our many partner institutions all over the world.
You remain enrolled and continue to pay tuition at Ara during your exchange, and the courses you study overseas may be credited towards your degree.
Our partner institutions vary in programmes, language of instruction, and accommodation options. We have a full time Student Exchange Coordinator who is available to advise on the options available to you. Please note that some destinations are programme specific.
Eligibility: You must be in year 2 of your degree at the time of travel, a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, and maintain B or above average.
The first step – expression of interest
- Browse our partner institutions and their programmes (see map and list below)
- Express your interest with Ara’s Student Exchange Coordinator.
- Email exchanges@ara.ac.nz with your name, student ID, the overseas institution and programme you’re interested in. The exchange coordinator can support you to find a suitable programme.
Find out more, come to the Exchanges Information Session Friday 14 March 2pm in x205!
*Please note not all overseas courses offered will be suitable to fill the requirements of your studies at Ara.
Meet with your programme manager to discuss preferred overseas courses and if they'll fit into your study plan at Ara. Please note: Courses you take on exchange will have to cover the requirements of your study programme here, which will need to be approved by your department.
Submit an exchange application to the Student Exchange Coordinator, including:
- Letter of motivation
- Academic transcript
- Department sign off
If you are accepted into the exchange programme, the exchange coordinator will nominate you to the host institution and support with your enrolment.
